Accelerated Reader (A.R.) can be very confusing, so this information is designed to help alleviate some of the confusion you may be experiencing.
A.R. is designed to encourage the children to not only read, but to comprehend what they read. There are several books that are included in the program.
Once your child has checked out their book, they are encouraged to read it several times before taking a test on it. You can help your child by listening to them read it to you and then asking them questions about it. It’s helpful to stop after each page or two and ask them a question about what they just read. This helps them remember details of the story.
When s/he is ready to take an A.R. test, they may take it in our classroom. They are allowed to take tests every day.
When it’s their turn to take a test, they sign onto the computer with their library number. Next, they select their book title. Once they’ve gotten into their test, they must put their book away and not refer to it. Most tests on the first grade level have only five questions and are worth ½ point. All A.R. questions are multiple choice. Once your child has answered all of the questions, they receive their score immediately. They should be able to tell you how many they got correct on the test.
I will send information home every couple of weeks regarding how many tests your child has taken and passed, their comprehension average (their goal is at least 85%), and how many points they have earned so far this nine weeks.
